Irene Avery was born to the parentage of John Henry Avery and Mattie Caldwell in 1933. She later married John Sheppard, and divorced keeping the name Irene Sheppard. Irene had 6 children (5 boys and 1 girl) William, Henry, Dwayne, Rickey, Paul and her youngest whom she often referred to as "that girl"... Anita. She proudly raised her family in a Christian manor in the Dallas, TX area. The love of Christ was always the center of her families foundation. Irene found great joy in sharing her God-given talent of singing gospel songs - favorite song being "Precious Lord". In the early 70's she dabbled a little as a professional gospel singer. Her children recall fond memories of listening to her sing on the radio when they were younger.
Irene was always known for her outgoing genuinely sweet personality and her infamous greetings to all (honey, baby, sugar, love). Her encouraging words inspired every person that she encountered. Her sisters and brothers, alike, found her to be the central source of peace within the family as she never had a harsh word to say about, nor to, anyone.
Irene displayed an unparalleled love for her children that could be seen from miles away. She dedicated her life to being a great (the best!) mother to her birth children and those who called her mom. She paid a lot of attention to her boys, but her attention towards her youngest, and only daughter, was profound. When Anita was a young girl, Irene was never seen without her shadow (Anita) by her side. Irene took great pride in being the primary influence of all of her childrens life, as her dream was to always keep her family following the Leadership of Christ.
As time would have it, her children grew up and started their families. Irene was very proud of them all. Four Grandchildren daughters: Tarmeka and Shemeka (Rick's girls), TaShebra - who is now in heaven with Irene (Dwayne's girl), and Sydney Irene Young (Anita's girl) who was named in honor of her beloved grandmother Irene. Irene was exceptionally proud of her beautiful granddaughters.
May 30th, 2007 Irene was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Later the cancer spread to her lungs. After almost a 3 year battle with cancer, on April 26th 2010 the Lord wrapped his precious arms around Irene and guided her to Heaven. No more suffering... her eternal reward has finally come.....
